- Do we? Hmm... SPEC don't seem to think so. Let's see:
- SPEC-92
- int fp
- P54C 100MHz: 122 93.2
- 603e 100MHz: 120 105
- 604 100MHz: 128 120
- " 133MHz: 176 157
- P54CS 133MHz: 174 121
- " 150MHz: 181 125
- " 166MHz: 198 138
-
- Nope, not twice as fast there. Typically the int performance seems
- pretty similar with a slight edge to the PPC, and fp performance is
- about 25% better. As for the immediate future:
-
- 620 133MHz: 225 300
- P6 150MHz: 245 220
- P6 200MHz: 320 283
-
- I don't think the PPC620 is out yet. Note, however, that the P6 is
- pretty useless for running Win'95 - only marginal performance gains
- over using a Pentium, because of the amount of 16bit code in '95.

-
- There won't need to be, for raw CPU power the two machines will be
- pretty similar, and will remain so for the next couple of years.
- However, we'll still have a much higher-performance OS, and I think
- the PPC range has a much sturdier base to build high performance chips
- on than Intel. OTOH, Intel has enormous sales to drive future R&D.
-
- >But even a 400mhz Pentium probably won't keep up with a Power Amiga.
-
- Not from a general use point of view, no. Put a CV64 in a stock
- A4000/040 and it begins to feel remarkably quick - certainly quick
- enough to give a Pentium running Win'95 or NT a kick in the pants - and
- that's with a CPU 7 *times* slower than a 100MHz Pentium.

-
- This is, of course, the real problem. Those Pentiums aren't a great
- deal different to the PPC chips performance-wise, but I think they're
- quite a bit cheaper. High volumes allow that.
